Forced to adapt to social distancing protocols, the ceremony was split into different venues but mostly took place in Los Angeles鈥� Union Station. For only the second time in history, a woman won best director 鈥� and the first woman of color at that, as the award went to Chloe Zhao for 鈥淣omadland,鈥� which also won best picture. And then there was Glenn Close鈥檚
Also notable: a very low number of 91传媒 winners.
To be fair, there was not a large pool of nominees to begin with. And 鈥淣omadland,鈥� a portrait of homeless nomads who move around the American West, did feature one 91传媒 producer who got his hands on the top prize 鈥� Peter Spears, a former actor best known before Sunday night as a producer of 鈥�,鈥� the hit 2017 drama based on 91传媒 writer Andr茅 Aciman鈥檚 novel of the same name.

鈥�Sacha Baron Cohen lost in the best adapted screenplay category 鈥� his was beat out by Florian Zeller鈥檚 鈥淭he Father,鈥� an adaptation of his own play. Cohen was also nominated as best supporting actor but lost to Daniel Kaluuya, star of 鈥淛udas and the Black Messiah.鈥�
鈥�Ann Roth won best costume design for her work on 鈥淢a Rainey鈥檚 Black Bottom,鈥� and for oldest Oscar winner in the process (James Ivory was also 89 when he won best adapted screenplay for 鈥淐all Me By Your Name鈥� in 2018). Along the way to working on over 100 films and plays, Roth has designed costumes for some of the most respected works of the last half century, ranging from 鈥淢idnight Cowboy鈥� to 鈥淭he English Patient鈥� to the recent lauded Broadway version of 鈥淭o Kill a Mockingbird.鈥�
鈥�鈥淲hite Eye,鈥� toward African migrants, lost in the live short category to 鈥淭wo Distant Strangers.鈥�
-After winning best screenplay at the Golden Globes, Aaron Sorkin鈥榮 鈥淭he Trial of the Chicago 7,鈥� about the 1968 Chicago Seven protesters, was up for six Oscars. Sorkin was personally up for best original screenplay. But the film didn鈥檛 win any on Sunday night.
-Pixar added to its Oscars chest, as 鈥淪oul鈥� was awarded best animated feature film. In December, Rabbi Benjamin Resnick .
-For 91传媒 songwriter Diane Warren, 12th time was not the charm. Her tune 鈥淚o s矛 (Seen),鈥� from the film 鈥淭he Life Ahead鈥� 鈥� which stars Sophia Loren as a Holocaust survivor 鈥� was nominated for best original song, the 12th time she had been nominated in that category. It lost to 鈥淔ight For You鈥� from 鈥淛udas and the Black Messiah.鈥�
-鈥�Mank,鈥� director David Fincher鈥檚 film , was up for a leading 10 awards, but only won two 鈥� best cinematography and best production design.
-Several famous Hollywood Jews were included in the show鈥檚 annual 鈥淚n Memoriam鈥� segment, paying tribute to stars and other industry veterans lost in the past year. The familiar faces included , , , , , , and .
In accepting an award for his humanitarian work, filmmaker Tyler Perry combating hate and about his inspirational mother. In one story he recounted, he found her at home one day when she was supposed to be at work. He said she worked at a 91传媒 community center, and there had been a bomb threat at the building. 鈥淪he couldn鈥檛 believe that someone wanted to blow up this place,鈥� he said.
